My master’s thesis investigates the morphological notion of boundary as architectural enclosure. Set in the Brianza region north of Milan, a continuous urban fabric shaped by industry and craftsmanship, the project examines how architecture can define access and collective identity within a dispersed conurbation renowned for its furniture-making heritage. The proposal explores the typology of a contemporary “library of things,” addressing the relationship between urban context, public accessibility, and the material culture of design.
The research positions itself within a wider discourse on institutional buildings that mediate between storage, display, and community use, referencing works such as DS+R’s V&A East Storehouse, Carmody Groarke’s British Library at Boston Spa, Karamuk Kuo’s Archaeological Depository in Augst, and Onsitestudio’s European Library in Milan. Beginning with the physical and spatial conditions of Brianza’s built environment, the study develops an inquiry into how architectural form can articulate presence and enclosure in a landscape that resists formal limits. Belgian béguinages and the residential fabrics of Kay Fisker in Denmark work as morphological precedents. Together with traditional courtyard typologies in Italian architecture, they inform the project’s exploration of boundary as both spatial and civic construct.
